Locker Story from Junior High
by Nathan on Jul.23, 2010
Seventh grade was when we all moved out of elementary school into junior high. Junior High had lockers. With lockers came the annoying feature of having to be unlocked multiple times a day. Some kids figured out jamming paper at the bottom kept the lock from locking. The problem with this solution was that you could tell from the outside who used this trick. For them security went from “locked” to “Look at me I’m an unlocked locker”. I decided the better solution was to just remove the back side of the lock. Thus keeping the locker looking like it was locked, but in reality just as unsafe as others. Security through obscurity.
This worked out great for a few weeks, I even removed the lock for my girlfriend at the time. Then one day she had her locker searched. Gig was up, “destroying school property”. Luckily only she got busted and didn’t rat me out. To be safe I put the lock back on my locker. Only problem was at some point the combo lock had fallen off and I had put it on upside down. So now my locker was locked but the combo was upside down. I tried a few time to unlock it with no success.
With my head hanging low I had to turn myself in. I didn’t have a choice. I was locked out of my locker. I was told to go back to class and it would be taken care of. About half way though the class I hear a drill start-up in about the same location as my locker. After class I notice some dents on my locker and a new lock. I head down to the office and am presented with a $27 bill to pay for the new lock.
I still say my locker security was better than anyone else in that school.
tl;dr – Locked locker to the point it had to be drilled open in the middle of school day.
5+ Years of Using Firefox
by Nathan on Nov.09, 2009
While reading my RSS feeds today I ran across multiple stories saying today is the 5th anniversary of Firefox 1.0 This got me thinking, I used Firefox before it even had that name. I used it back when it was still called Phoenix. I first started using Phoenix after hearing Leo Laporte say something about it on Call For Help. Yep these were the old days when TechTV was still on the air. Anyways I remember him saying it was portable, and I just happen to have a 128mb USB drive burning a hole in my pocket. By the way, that USB drive cost me $100. I was spending a bunch of time online between classes at the Library at UAH and Phoenix was awesome, it let me have an entire browser on a removable drive. I even remember spending hours playing with extensions when they first came out. Cut to 5+ years later, and I’m still using Firefox at home, work, and on the go. I still have a portable version I keep on a 8gb thumb drive which cost me $12. As some thing changes some stay the same.
News: Firefox turns five
Its over!
by Nathan on May.04, 2006
There goes another semester. Its lost to the times, although I believe some of that time will have to be repeated. I really need to stop doing that. I hate living at home, and I really think that is one of my biggest problems. When I get home and try to work on something, I always get interrupted. Its just not a good environment for me to learn. I don’t know maybe this summer I can try to make a change. Maybe with the new job, I can afford leave and live on my own, in town somewhere. That would be great. But there is always that problem with my parents, and how they don’t what to let me go. I can just see it now “you can move out, you cant afford it, you won’t go back to school” I went through this at the end of last semester. Then I just fell back into the same old life. I can’t stand it anymore.

Well here is a some what finished version of my new blog. I hope to have more stuff on the sides, but its hard work. Anyway, I think I’m going to make this into a podcast as well. Since this is part of The Morning Wood [Dot] Org
So today was just a great day, I woke up late, had a terrible test in Cal B, then came to work to find that my computer had be messed with. The so called computer programmer came over and deleted a bunch of my programs. Noticed I didn’t say uninstalled them, cause that’s not what he did, he just went to the program files and deleted them. So its another long day, hey I have Astronomy home work to do, I better get on that tonight.
Later All
Nathan
