Riff Trax: Christmas Dream
by Nathan on Dec.23, 2009, under Uncategorized
Watching this movie marks only the second time in my life I have ever walked out of a theater. I guess it never crossed my mind that all the RiffTrax where actually scripted, but watching this movie sure made me realize it was. Everything is scripted including the bickering back and forth between the Riffers. It made the whole concept of Riffing feel so wrong. I thought these guys were just great at what they do, and could come up with riffs on the spot. In fact this is completely wrong, and they probably rehearsed many times before performing in front of a live audience.
Most of you are probably thinking I’m an idiot for thinking this wasn’t rehearsed beforehand, but really its just one of those things that never crossed my mind. I really like Mystery Science Theater 3000, but I just couldn’t sit through this RiffTrax thing. I walked out about half way, and don’t feel to bad about it. Being there for an hour and only laughing 3 times, I feel I made the right decision. Oh well at least I know not to pay $12.50 next time right?

Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day
by Nathan on Dec.23, 2009, under Uncategorized
Last night I went to see Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day. If you don’t know its a squeal to Boondock Saints a film that was released a decade ago. After the first movie the writer and director Troy Duffy pissed a few people off and ended up getting himself black balled from Hollywood. It took him 8 years to finally get the money to make this sequel. If you want to read more about the the directory take a look at his Wikipedia page.
This movie is set 8 years after the first. The boys have run off to Ireland to hide out, and work on a farm. A priest is killed and the murder is made to look like they did it. So of course they come back to Boston. From there its a killing spree to find out who murdered the priest. I’ll be blunt, the movie pretty much sucked. The dialog on the other hand was down right awesome. Acting by the main characters was good, but the supporting cast wasn’t so hot. Also this is probably the theaters fault, but the audio was out of sync sometimes, and I couldn’t read the sub-titles.
I laughed many times while watching this movie. Its not a comedic film, but the brothers act very well together, and have some great lines. Also there is a Mexican who has just as many comedic parts. If you like the first movie, and have to watch this one, look past the story and film, and listen to the dialog. Its what makes the movie alright to watch.

Inglourious Basterds
by Nathan on Dec.15, 2009, under Uncategorized
Inglourious Basterds comes out on DVD today, and I just realized I never did a review after seeing it in the theater. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the movie, but some times I hate Quentin Tarantino. I think in film school he received a list of “Things Never To Do When Making A Movie“. On this list were things like “never have black screen for more than 15sec” and “never have one scene that is more than 5min long“. Ever since he has been checking these things off in every movie he makes. Inglourious Basterds is no exception. The story is great, though less of a Kill Nazis movie than I thought it was going to be. I would defiantly say buy it, totally worth it.

Does Play Count Make A Viral Video, Viral?
by Nathan on Dec.10, 2009, under Uncategorized
Reading my RSS feeds today I came across this story on TechCrunch. Basically saying the Top 10 Viral Videos of this year are not really viral videos at all. They are produced content that many people have watched. So I guess the question is: What is a viral video?
When I hear viral video, I think of it as a video made by an individual, that has become a hit around the web. I don’t think about Michael Jackson: Thriller being a viral video. Doesn’t a viral video need to be new? For me, there is a switch in my brain that says “Hey this is a viral video.” This has never happened when watching a music video. With a music video I see an add for music, I see produced content that cost millions to make. I don’t care how many times people watch a music video its just not viral.
What do you think?
